This addition to the "Britain in Old Photographs" series brings together a collection of black-and-white pictures spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawn from family albums, local collections and professional photographers, they show the way things were and how they have changed.
Nestled on the South Devon coast, the neighbouring settlements of Seaton and Axmouth have an enviable geographical setting and a special community spirit. Featured here are chapters on the community, schools, seashore, high days and holidays and local events.
Seaton was home to many evacuees, some of whom remained. It was also the site of an internment camp, and home to soldiers from many lands, some of whom were killed fighting for the British cause. Seaton families also many sons, of them in heroic circumstances. It was a time when the community came together in a way which has not been seen since.
In its heyday, Brixham's fishermen were renowned for the vast number of fish they landed, the choir was one of the finest in the west of England, and it was a beautiful place to live. Today, it continues to be a picturesque place to live and visit, and the links to fishing and music are still very much alive.
